Madras Art Guild Launches 5th Edition of Month-Long Public Art Festival in Chennai

Chennai: Madras Art Guild, supported by Yuj Foundation, inaugurated the fifth edition of its month-long Public Art Festival themed “The Future is Now” at VR Chennai. The festival was opened by Shobana with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and the unveiling of the ‘Kala Car’, followed by classical dance performances and gallery previews.

Featuring more than 1,300 artworks — including paintings, photography, sculptures, and installations — the 2026 edition is the largest to date. Works from leading art institutions, student artists, and creative communities are showcased across multiple gallery spaces and public areas.

Key highlights include basement art installations by artists from Cholamandal Artists’ Village, interactive exhibits such as 3D art projects, and immersive public installations. In collaboration with UNESCO, the festival presents the photography exhibition “Pockets of Hope”, focusing on marine ecosystems and climate awareness, alongside the recycled-material installation “PORTALS”.

International collaborations include the Love Piano installation presented with the Consulate General of Japan in Chennai and Yamaha. Additional programmes feature photography exhibitions with the Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation, street theatre performances, folk art showcases, a student film festival, literature events, creative workshops, and an artisanal bazaar.

Curator Sumi Gupta said the festival blends traditional and technology-led art forms, encouraging public dialogue and creative engagement. Supported by multiple partners, the Madras Art Guild continues its mission of transforming public spaces into accessible art hubs, celebrating Chennai’s evolving creative ecosystem and cultural identity.
