IIT Madras Names Theoretical Computer Science Centre After Alumnus Arvind Raghunathan
Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras on Thursday announced the establishment of a new Centre for Theoretical Computer Science, named after alumnus Arvind Raghunathan following his philanthropic contribution.
The facility, titled the Arvind Raghunathan Centre for Theoretical Computer Science (ARtCS), aims to advance foundational research in key areas of computational science and serve as a hub for long-term theoretical inquiry.
IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti expressed gratitude for the contribution, stating that the initiative would strengthen cutting-edge research in computational science at a crucial time.
Raghunathan, recalling his years at IIT Madras, said the institution had instilled in him a deep intellectual curiosity. He expressed hope that the new centre would provide future students access to world-class research and mentorship in theoretical disciplines.
The centre is set to be formally inaugurated by Prof. Kamakoti and will be guided by an advisory board comprising eminent academicians and industry leaders, including Shafi Goldwasser, Prabhakar Raghavan, Venkat Guruswami, Ashwin Mahalingam, R. Anand, and Raghunathan.
ARtCS will focus on core areas such as cryptography, computational complexity, algorithms, graph theory, logic and databases, theoretical machine learning, quantum computing, and AI privacy. It will also support students across undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels.
An alumnus of IIT Madras in electrical engineering, Raghunathan later earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. He has had a diverse career spanning academia, equity proprietary trading with global firms, and entrepreneurship, including ventures in fintech, investment management, and artificial intelligence.
