Stellantis India Crosses 50,000 Smart Car Production Milestone at Thiruvallur Plant
Chennai: Stellantis India has achieved a significant milestone with the rollout of its 50,000th vehicle from its advanced manufacturing facility in Thiruvallur, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s position as a key automotive manufacturing hub.
The milestone underscores the success of Stellantis’ Smart Car platform, a globally deployed architecture developed and engineered in India by the company’s local R&D teams. Designed for both domestic and international markets, the platform is currently used across regions including Europe, South America, and Asia—highlighting India’s growing role in Stellantis’ global engineering and manufacturing ecosystem.
Vehicles produced at the Thiruvallur facility cater not only to the Indian market but also to key export destinations such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. This dual-market strategy strengthens Tamil Nadu’s reputation as a competitive, export-oriented automotive hub.
Since commencing operations, the plant has generated substantial economic value in the region. It has created over 1,100 direct jobs while supporting several thousand indirect employment opportunities through suppliers, logistics providers, and ancillary industries across the Chennai region. The facility has also contributed to the development of a strong local vendor ecosystem, aligned with the state government’s focus on industrial growth and employment generation.
The Thiruvallur plant continues to maintain high standards of quality and efficiency, driven by strong localisation efforts under the Make in India initiative and the adoption of advanced, sustainable manufacturing practices.
Commenting on the achievement, Shailesh Hazela said, “This 50,000-unit rollout marks an important step in Stellantis India’s manufacturing journey and reflects the strength of our teams, supplier partners, dealers, and the trust of our customers. Tamil Nadu’s progressive industrial policies and skilled talent have been central to our growth, and we remain committed to investing in the region as we scale our operations sustainably.”
Looking ahead, Stellantis India plans to further expand its production capabilities, boost export volumes, and introduce globally competitive products from its Indian facilities, with the Thiruvallur plant playing a central role in these growth ambitions.
