Grassroots Environmental Champions Honoured with Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award 2026 in Chennai
Chennai: The Rotary Club of Madras East (RI District 3234), in association with CavinKare Private Limited, presented the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2026 in Chennai on Wednesday, recognising two grassroots environmental leaders for their contributions to sustainable development and community-based environmental conservation.
The 2026 award recipients are Pechiyammal, Leader of the Neithal Self Help Group from Vedhalai in Ramanathapuram district, and Govindhammal, former Director of the Nallavur Farmer Producer Company Limited in Villupuram district.
Recognising Community-Led Environmental Initiatives
According to the organisers, Pechiyammal has played a key role in the conservation of the Gulf of Mannar through community-led initiatives, including ghost fishing gear recovery and marine waste management. Her efforts have also focused on creating livelihood opportunities for coastal women and encouraging participatory coastal governance.
Govindhammal was recognised for her work in promoting sustainable agriculture among smallholder farmers. Her initiatives include restoring natural resources, strengthening farmer producer organisations, supporting climate-resilient farming practices, and encouraging rural women’s leadership and value addition in agriculture.
Awards Presented by National Biodiversity Authority Chairman
The awards were presented by Dr. Virendra Tiwari, Chairman of the National Biodiversity Authority, in the presence of Rtn. D. Suresh Jain, District Governor of RI District 3234, and Rtn. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.
Instituted by the Rotary Club of Madras East with the support of CavinKare Private Limited, the awards recognise grassroots environmental leaders whose work focuses on ecological conservation, community participation, and sustainable development.
