Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: AINU Chennai Calls for Early Evaluation and Proactive Prostate Health
Chennai: The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Chennai, has called for greater awareness of prostate health during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, urging men, particularly those in higher-risk age groups, to seek timely medical evaluation rather than waiting for symptoms to become pronounced.
Prostate cancer may not always cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Warning signs such as changes in urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow, increased urinary frequency, blood in the urine or semen, and persistent bone or back pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
However, urinary symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous prostate conditions, making appropriate medical assessment important.
Early Evaluation for Prostate Health
Dr. Arun Kumar Balakrishnan, Chief Uro-Oncologist, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgeon and Managing Director, AINU, said prostate cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms.
He urged men to discuss prostate health with their doctors, particularly as they grow older or have a family history of prostate cancer.
When prostate cancer is suspected, doctors may use clinical assessment, PSA testing, digital rectal examination, multiparametric MRI and, when indicated, biopsy to establish a diagnosis.
The diagnostic approach may vary according to a man’s age, risk factors, PSA levels and other clinical findings. Treatment decisions depend on factors including the cancer’s risk category, stage, overall health and individual preferences.
Depending on the disease characteristics, treatment options can include active surveillance for selected lower-risk cancers, surgery, radiation therapy and systemic treatments.
Awareness Campaign Launched
As part of its awareness initiative, AINU Chennai has introduced “Mr. Prostate – Ennamama Kannu, Sowkiyama?”, a campaign aimed at encouraging conversations around prostate health and timely medical evaluation.
The campaign highlights that prostate cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms and that men do not necessarily have to wait for urinary symptoms before discussing prostate health with a doctor.
AINU is encouraging men aged 40 years and above to consider proactive prostate health evaluation in consultation with a healthcare professional.
Actor Karthik Kumar, who is supporting the initiative, said prostate health is often overlooked until symptoms become difficult to ignore and encouraged men to seek medical advice without hesitation.
Free Prostate Health Check-up Camp
AINU Chennai will conduct a Free Prostate Health Check-up Camp from September 24 to 30, 2026.

CUE (Complete Urine Examination)
Doctor Consultation
The initiative aims to encourage men to include prostate health in regular healthcare discussions rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.
