JICA Extends ODA Loan of ₹3,065 Crores for Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant

Chennai: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a loan agreement of approximately ₹3,065 crores (52,556 million Japanese Yen) for the Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant (II) project.

The project aims to strengthen safe and stable water supply in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, which is facing immense pressure due to rapid urbanization and limited water resources.

The project will involve the construction of a new 400 MLD desalination plant, water transmission and distribution infrastructure, including pumping stations, reservoirs, and pipelines.

TAKEUCHI Takuro, Chief Representative of JICA India, said, “Through this project, JICA is committed to supporting Chennai’s efforts to establish a resilient and sustainable water supply system.”

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will implement and operate the project, which aligns with Japan’s Development Cooperation Policy with India and the Kumamoto Water Initiative.
