Kauvery Hospital Chennai Launches 5G-Enabled Ambulance Fleet for Real-Time Patient Monitoring
Chennai: Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, has introduced a 5G-enabled continuous care ambulance fleet that allows hospital-based specialists to remotely monitor patients’ vital signs in real time and guide paramedics while they are being transported to the hospital.
The service was launched by Dr. A. Amalraj IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Greater Chennai Police, in the presence of Dr. Manivannan Selvaraj, Founder and Managing Director, Kauvery Group of Hospitals.
The network comprises more than 30 advanced ambulances deployed across Kauvery Alwarpet, Vadapalani, Radial Road and Maa Kauvery Radial Road. The ambulances are equipped to handle a range of emergencies, including neonatal, paediatric, neurological and cardiac care.
Ambulances Positioned Across Key Chennai Locations
The ambulances have been strategically deployed at locations identified based on population density, public gathering points, traffic patterns and accident-prone zones. Deployment areas include Poonamallee High Road, Porur, the Kilambakkam–Vandalur stretch, Outer Ring Road, Karapakkam–OMR stretch, Tondiarpet, Perambur, Adyar, Guindy, Medavakkam and Kelambakkam, among others.
According to the hospital, positioning ambulances closer to high-demand areas is intended to reduce travel time and improve emergency response.
Real-Time Monitoring Through 5G Connectivity
The ambulance fleet is equipped with a Continuous Patient Monitoring System (CPMS) connected to a control room at the hospital. Using GPS-enabled Computer-Aided Dispatch, the system identifies the nearest available ambulance when an emergency call is received and facilitates its deployment.
The ambulances are equipped as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) units, with ventilators, defibrillators, syringe and infusion pumps, suction apparatus and multiparameter monitors.
An IoT-based architecture collects patient vital parameters, including SpO2, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and pulse rate, and transmits the information to the hospital in real time.
The 5G network provides high-speed, low-latency connectivity, allowing emergency physicians to review patient information and provide guidance to paramedics while the ambulance is en route. The hospital said this enables the medical team to have preliminary clinical information before the patient arrives.
24/7 Emergency Access Through Kauvery Kare App
The continuous care ambulance service can also be accessed through the one-tap SOS feature on the Kauvery Kare App. Once activated, the control room contacts the user, who can connect with a Kauvery doctor through a 24/7 video call for medical guidance until emergency assistance arrives.
The ambulance service currently handles an average of 1,100 emergencies per month across Chennai, according to the hospital.
Commenting on the initiative, Dr. A. Amalraj IPS said that strengthening coordination and care delivery before a patient reaches the hospital is important in a city where emergency response times can be critical.
