Primus Partners Report Highlights Pathways for 23.5 Million Indian Youth in Gig Economy
Mumbai: India’s gig economy, one of the fastest-growing segments of the labour market, is at a crucial turning point, according to a new report by Primus Partners titled “Unlocking the Future: Finding a Path for 23.5 Million Indian Youth to Transition Beyond the Gig Economy.” The study examines income patterns, skill progression, and social protection gaps, while outlining strategies to strengthen long-term workforce mobility and productivity.
Modest Income Growth, Limited Skill Advancement
The report reveals that while digital platforms have absorbed large-scale employment, income growth remains modest for many workers. Over 60% of surveyed gig workers put in full-time hours, yet average monthly earnings hover around ₹22,500. Increases are often tied to longer working hours rather than structured skill development, underscoring the need for clearer career progression frameworks.
Early Entry Shapes Career Trajectories
Primus Partners notes that many youth enter gig work immediately after school, often continuing in similar roles into their mid-20s. Without formal skilling pathways, this trend risks limiting long-term career growth, especially as financial responsibilities increase.
Social Protection Gaps
The study also highlights significant gaps in social protection, with 31% of gig workers lacking access to insurance, pension, or savings-linked benefits. Survey evidence suggests that workers with access to training and basic protections report greater financial stability and higher earning potential, reinforcing the need for targeted interventions.
Expert View
Nilaya Varma, Co-Founder & CEO, Primus Partners, said: “The gig economy has created scale and flexibility in India’s labour market. The next phase must focus on enabling skill development, income progression, and mobility so that gig work becomes a stepping stone to more sustainable livelihoods.”
Strengthening the Gig Ecosystem
The report identifies clear opportunities to strengthen the gig economy through:
- Structured skilling pathways
- Portable benefits
- Transition mechanisms into higher-value roles
By aligning platforms, policymakers, and industry around these priorities, India can unlock stronger workforce outcomes and ensure gig work serves as a launchpad for sustainable careers over the next decade.
