Rotary Clubs Join Hands to Restore Vellakkal Big Lake and Launch Blue-Green Ecological Forest

Chennai: In celebration of World Environment Day, four Rotary Clubs have come together to restore Vellakkal Big Lake and launch a Blue-Green Ecological Forest in Medavakkam, Chennai. The project aims to rejuvenate local biodiversity and create a sustainable environmental model for urban neighborhoods.

The project involves planting over 3,000 native saplings to establish a dense Blue-Green Ecological Forest. This initiative is expected to increase groundwater levels, encourage local flora and fauna, and reduce ambient temperatures in the vicinity by up to 4°C. The four Rotary Clubs contributing to this project are:

  • Rotary Club of Chennai Capital (Main Sponsor)
  • Rotary Club of Madras Midtown
  • Rotary Club of Chennai Central Elite
  • Rotary Club of Chennai Sneham

Rtn. Hemant Khandelwal, President of Rotary Club of Chennai Capital, said, “We are proud to contribute to the long-term sustainability and well-being of our community. This project is not just about planting trees or restoring a lake — it’s about restoring hope, balance, and resilience in our environment.”

The project was formally inaugurated by Sivabooshanam Ravi, President of Medavakkam Panchayat, and B. Ravi, Union Councillor & Former President of Medavakkam Panchayat. The event was graced by Chief Guests Film Actor Arya and Rtn. Mahaveer Bothra, Rotary District Governor, District 3233. The entire execution is being carried out by the Yatha Green Council of India (NGO).
