1976 MMC Batch Marks 50 Years with Golden Jubilee Reunion and Social Initiative
Chennai: More than 110 alumni of Madras Medical College (MMC), who joined the institution in 1976, gathered at its 129-year-old red-brick heritage building, popularly known as the ‘Red Fort’, to mark 50 years since they began their medical journey.
The alumni travelled from different parts of India and abroad to participate in the golden jubilee reunion and revisit memories of their student years at the historic institution.
The heritage building, constructed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, had housed the Department of Anatomy for several decades. The batch began its medical education in 1976, during a period marked by significant political uncertainty in India. Despite the circumstances, the students remained focused on their medical education and received training and guidance from eminent teachers.
Alumni Extend Support to Underprivileged Women
As part of the reunion, the alumni joined hands with the Rotary Club of Madras Esplanade to support five destitute mothers. The group sponsored five pink autos, each valued at Rs 1.75 lakh, with the aim of helping the women achieve financial independence and build sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative was spearheaded by the group’s Organising Chairman, Dr. Mahender. The autos will be handed over to the beneficiaries by Past District Governor Rtn. Chandra Mohan, in the presence of veteran filmmaker Suresh Krissna, on Saturday.
Speaking about the reunion, Dr. Mahender said the gathering was an opportunity not only to revisit the institution that shaped their careers but also to give back to society.
“Fifty years ago, we came to Madras Medical College as young students with dreams in our eyes and a determination to serve. Today, returning to the same institution as doctors, we realise how deeply it has shaped our lives,” he said.
He added that supporting women towards self-reliance was intended to carry forward the spirit of service instilled by their teachers and the institution.
The golden jubilee reunion thus combined memories of five decades with a social initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged women and recognising the role MMC played in shaping generations of doctors.
