LG-Branded Hing Sale Triggers Protest at Injambakkam Store
Chennai: A protest was held at Kovai Palamuthir Nilayam in Injambakkam after an LG-branded compounded hing product was found available for sale at the outlet, despite a Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) prohibition-of-sale order dated August 29 concerning the product.
The customer questioned the store management after learning about the FSSAI action against compounded hing manufactured by Laljee Godhoo & Company, associated with the LG Brand Unit.
According to the FSSAI action, samples of the product were found to be substandard and non-compliant. The company was also advised to voluntarily recall substandard products that had already entered the market.
During the discussion at the outlet, the store management produced a communication from the company stating that LG is challenging the regulatory action. However, the copy shown at the site did not cite any judicial or regulatory order staying, suspending or otherwise setting aside the FSSAI prohibition.
The situation subsequently led to police intervention, with Neelangarai Police arriving at the outlet and bringing the situation under control.
Video footage, photographs of the product and proof of purchase are available in connection with the incident and to substantiate the product’s availability at the outlet.
The incident has raised questions about the continued retail availability of the product following the FSSAI action and whether the company communication produced at the outlet has any legal or regulatory effect on the prohibition order.
