Chennai Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. S. Arumugam Completes 1,000 Robotic Knee Replacement Surgeries
Chennai: Dr. S. Arumugam, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Specialist and Head of the Department of Robotic Joint Reconstruction at Prashanth Hospitals, Velachery, has completed 1,000 robotic-assisted knee replacement surgeries, becoming the first orthopaedic surgeon in South India to achieve the milestone.
The recognition was presented by Padma Shri Dr. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon and former Vice-Chancellor of Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, during a function held at Prashanth Hospitals.
The event was attended by actor and producer Radikaa Sarathkumar, who participated as the Guest of Honour, along with Dr. C. Geetha Haripriya, Chairperson of Prashanth Group of Hospitals, Dr. G. Gopalaswamy, Managing Director, Dr. Prashanth Krishna, Director, Dr. Samhitha Moturi, Director, and other dignitaries.
Patients Showcase Improved Mobility
As part of the programme, more than 20 patients who had undergone robotic-assisted knee replacement surgeries participated in a ramp walk to demonstrate their restored mobility and recovery. Radikaa Sarathkumar joined the patients during the event in support of their rehabilitation journey.
Hospital Announces Expansion of Robotic Surgery Facilities
Prashanth Hospitals also announced plans to strengthen its orthopaedic services by adding a second fourth-generation VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution, expanding its robotic surgery capabilities.
According to the hospital, the robotic knee replacement programme was inaugurated in 2023 by Padma Shri Dr. Mayilvahanan Natarajan. Since its launch, Dr. S. Arumugam has completed more than 1,000 robotic-assisted knee replacement procedures within three years.

Dr. S. Arumugam said robotic-assisted surgery enables personalised knee replacement procedures with improved precision, better alignment and faster recovery, while helping achieve improved functional outcomes for patients.
Dr. Prashanth Krishna, Director of Prashanth Group of Hospitals, said robotic-assisted surgery has enhanced the planning and execution of joint replacement procedures, and the addition of another VELYS™ robotic system would expand access to advanced orthopaedic treatment.
Actor Radikaa Sarathkumar said witnessing patients regain mobility highlighted the impact of advanced medical care in helping people return to active daily lives.

Prashanth Hospitals stated that it had previously become Chennai’s first hospital to complete more than 500 robotic-assisted knee replacement surgeries using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution.
