Chennai Surgeon Completes Over 300 Evolution® Medial-Pivot Knee Replacements in Less Than a Year
Chennai: Dr. Vetri Kumar, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Parvathy Hospital, Chennai, has completed more than 300 Total Knee Replacement (TKR) procedures using the Evolution® Medial-Pivot Knee System in less than a year. According to the hospital, he is the first surgeon in South Asia to achieve this milestone.
The achievement reflects the increasing adoption of personalised knee replacement techniques that focus on restoring the natural movement and function of the knee rather than only replacing the damaged joint.
The Evolution® Medial-Pivot Knee System is designed to replicate the biomechanics of the natural knee by preserving physiological medial stability while allowing natural rotational movement. The approach aims to improve function, range of motion and long-term implant performance.
According to the hospital, the technique differs from conventional knee replacement methods that primarily focus on mechanical alignment. The system is intended to restore native knee kinematics and support improved post-surgical outcomes.
Speaking on the milestone, Dr. Vetri Kumar said modern knee replacement surgery extends beyond pain relief and focuses on restoring natural knee function. He noted that each patient’s anatomy is different and that personalised treatment can help patients regain mobility and return to their daily activities. He also pointed out that nearly 60 million Indians are affected by osteoarthritis, with many seeking treatment only after years of living with pain.
Dr. Mukesh Parmar, Managing Director and Senior General Manager – India and South Asia, MicroPort Orthopedics, said the milestone represents the growing adoption of personalised arthroplasty in India and reflects the role of innovation and clinical practice in improving patient outcomes.
Dr. Vetri Kumar is also a Founding Member of the Personalised Arthroplasty Society (PAS) in India and an active member of its international community, where he mentors surgeons and promotes advanced joint replacement techniques.
The hospital also announced that Dr. Vetri Kumar is preparing to establish a dedicated Knee & Joint Replacement Centre in Chennai to expand access to advanced joint reconstruction and specialised patient care.
According to the hospital, the milestone highlights the growing role of personalised knee replacement techniques in orthopaedic surgery and India’s continued contribution to advancements in joint replacement care.
