NICMAR Highlights Growing Demand for Specialised Infrastructure Management Talent in India

Mumbai: NICMAR has highlighted the increasing need for domain-specific management professionals as India’s infrastructure sector moves towards a more technology-driven and innovation-focused phase of growth.

According to the institution, rising investments in transportation, smart cities, renewable energy, urban development, and industrial infrastructure are changing the skill requirements for professionals leading large-scale projects across the country.

While traditional management education has focused on broad business and leadership skills, the growing complexity of infrastructure projects is creating demand for professionals with specialised knowledge in construction, real estate, infrastructure, and project management.

Infrastructure Sector Requires Diverse Expertise

NICMAR noted that infrastructure and construction projects require expertise across multiple areas, including:

  • Project management
  • Construction technology
  • Infrastructure finance
  • Procurement and contracts
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Sustainability
  • Stakeholder management

Industry leaders are increasingly expected to manage large investments, environmental considerations, evolving regulations, and advanced technologies while ensuring efficient project execution.

Technology Reshaping Infrastructure Projects

The institution pointed out that technologies such as:

  • Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Digital Twins
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Predictive Analytics
  • Digital Project Management Platforms

are transforming the planning, execution, and monitoring of infrastructure projects.

As a result, organisations are seeking professionals who can combine management capabilities with sector-specific technical expertise.

Role of Specialised Management Education

According to NICMAR, specialised management programmes are becoming increasingly important in preparing professionals for industry-specific challenges.

Such programmes provide training in areas including project execution, infrastructure finance, urban development, sustainability, procurement, and construction management, helping graduates address real-world industry requirements.

The institution stated that domain-focused education can help create a workforce equipped to support India’s long-term infrastructure and urban development goals.

Industry Outlook

Commenting on the changing requirements of the sector, Tapash Kumar Ganguli, Director General, NICMAR, said India’s infrastructure growth increasingly depends on innovation, sustainability, technology integration, and efficient project delivery.

He noted that while general management skills remain important, sectors such as construction, real estate, and infrastructure require professionals who understand project execution, regulatory frameworks, stakeholder management, and emerging technologies.

NICMAR, which has been involved in specialised education for the construction, real estate, infrastructure, and project management sectors for more than four decades, said the demand for professionals with both business management skills and industry-specific expertise is expected to grow as infrastructure continues to play a key role in India’s economic development.

The institution added that specialised management education is likely to become increasingly important in developing future leaders for India’s infrastructure sector.
