Andhra Pradesh and RUSAL Discuss Expansion of Alumina Project into Integrated Aluminium Complex at SPIEF 2026
Mumbai: Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, IT and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, held talks with senior executives of RUSAL during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, focusing on the company’s existing investment in the state and potential expansion opportunities in the aluminium sector.
The discussions centred on RUSAL’s investment in Pioneer Aluminium Industries, in which the company acquired a 26 per cent stake in March 2025. Pioneer Aluminium Industries operates a 1.5 million tonne per annum alumina refinery in Andhra Pradesh, supplying both domestic and international markets.
During the meeting, Minister Lokesh reviewed the progress of the investment and invited RUSAL to consider establishing aluminium smelting operations alongside the existing alumina refinery. According to the discussions, such an expansion could enable the conversion of alumina produced in Andhra Pradesh into primary aluminium within the state.
The two sides also explored the possibility of developing an integrated aluminium manufacturing ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh by utilising the state’s industrial infrastructure, port connectivity, logistics network, and renewable energy capacity.
Officials noted that the proposed expansion could support growing demand for aluminium across sectors such as automotive, aerospace, power, construction, and advanced manufacturing.
Speaking during the meeting, Nara Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh has the potential to move further along the aluminium value chain by increasing domestic production of value-added aluminium products rather than exporting alumina.
RUSAL representatives provided updates on the company’s operations in India and discussed its long-term interest in the country’s metals and manufacturing industries. The company stated that it would evaluate the proposals discussed and examine opportunities for expanding its presence in Andhra Pradesh in the future.
