Kauvery Hospital and Lions District 3241C Launch Mobile Mammogram Unit for Early Breast Cancer Screening in Chennai

Chennai: Kauvery Hospital Chennai, in association with the Lions Club of Chennai KVG Charitable Trust and Lions District 3241C, has launched a Mobile Mammogram Unit aimed at improving access to early breast cancer screening for women across Tamil Nadu.

The initiative, introduced as part of the hospital’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, seeks to make preventive breast health services more accessible to women who may find it difficult to visit hospitals or diagnostic centres for routine screening.

The Mobile Mammogram Unit was flagged off by Thiru P. Venkatramanan, Hon’ble Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Government of Tamil Nadu.

Mobile Unit to Offer Multiple Women’s Health Screening Services

The specially equipped mobile unit provides digital mammography for breast cancer screening and will travel to residential neighbourhoods, workplaces, community centres and other suburban and urban locations.

In addition to mammography, the unit will also offer Pap smear and colposcopy services, enabling screening for cervical cancer and related pre-cancerous conditions.

Women undergoing screening will also have access to consultations with Kauvery Hospital’s women specialists and radiologists, who will provide counselling on test results and recommend further evaluation or treatment when necessary.

Focus on Early Detection

Speaking at the launch, PMJF Lion S. Bose, District Governor, Lions District 3241C, said breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women in Tamil Nadu and that delayed screening due to limited awareness and accessibility continues to be a major concern.

He said the initiative aims to bring screening services closer to women living in urban, semi-urban and rural areas through the collaboration between Lions International and Kauvery Hospital.

Dr. Sujay Susikar, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgeon, said data from the state cancer registry identifies breast cancer as the most common cancer among women, underscoring the importance of timely diagnosis and screening.

He noted that advances in cancer treatment have significantly improved outcomes when breast cancer is detected at an early stage, and said the mobile screening programme is intended to improve access to preventive care.

Community-Based Preventive Healthcare

Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, said the initiative is designed to make preventive healthcare more accessible while encouraging women to undergo regular screening.

According to the hospital, the Mobile Mammogram Unit will begin conducting scheduled screening camps in the coming weeks, with a particular focus on communities where access to early cancer screening services remains limited.

The initiative aims to promote awareness about breast and cervical cancer screening while supporting early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.
