Motherson Commissions First Captive Solar Power Project in Uttar Pradesh

Mumbai: Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (Motherson), through its energy business company Motherson New Energy Limited (MNEL), has commissioned its first ground-mounted captive solar power project in Uttar Pradesh.

The 15 MWp solar facility, developed through MNEL’s subsidiary Onega Solar Private Limited, is located in Mahoba district and will supply renewable electricity to multiple Motherson manufacturing plants across the state.

According to the company, the project has been developed as a group captive renewable energy facility and is expected to generate approximately 23.4 GWh of electricity annually. The solar plant is also projected to reduce around 17,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The company stated that the project is intended to support its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing operations while improving energy reliability and long-term cost visibility.

The solar project was developed in partnership with renewable energy company ib vogt. The company supported various stages of the project, including land acquisition, regulatory approvals, technical design and EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) execution.

Commenting on the development, Laksh Vaaman Sehgal, Vice Chairman of Motherson Group, said the commissioning of the captive solar project marks an important step in strengthening the company’s energy resilience while reducing its environmental impact.

Kunal Vohra, Chief Operating Officer of the Energy Business at Motherson Group, said access to renewable power is becoming increasingly important for manufacturing operations and that the project lays the foundation for further expansion of the company’s renewable energy portfolio.

Parish Gupta, CEO and Managing Director of ib vogt Solar India, said the project reflects efforts to support industrial decarbonisation through renewable energy solutions.

The solar facility forms part of Motherson’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes increasing renewable energy adoption, reducing carbon intensity across operations and supporting decarbonisation initiatives within its manufacturing network.

The company said Motherson New Energy Limited is also evaluating additional renewable energy opportunities in several Indian states as part of its long-term energy transition plans.
