Sun TV Network Launches Sun NXT Shorts for Mobile and Television Viewing

Chennai: Sun TV Network has launched Sun NXT Shorts, a micro-drama platform integrated into the existing Sun NXT application. The new service focuses on short-form storytelling for audiences across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.

Sun NXT Shorts offers short, episodic content designed for quick consumption on mobile devices as well as television. The platform marks Sun TV Network’s entry into the micro-entertainment segment, which has gained popularity among digital audiences globally.

Micro-dramas to be Available on Television

According to the company, Sun NXT Shorts is the first platform in South India to bring micro-dramas to television in a 4:3 format. The format is intended to retain the visual characteristics of short-form content while adapting it for larger screens.

The service uses different framing approaches depending on the viewing device, with tighter close-ups for mobile screens and wider scenes in 4:3 format for television.

Movies and Serials Re-edited into Short Episodes

The platform’s catalogue includes exclusive original series, international dubbed shorts, movies and selected Sun TV serials from the Sun NXT library. Content will be remastered, resized and re-edited into shorter episodes in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Movies including Rajinikanth’s Endhiran, Suriya’s Ayan and Dhanush’s Thiruchitrambalam will be presented in the short-episode format. Popular television serials such as Ethirneechal, Kayal and Sundari will also be adapted into shorter episodic versions.

Sun TV Network said the service will include both existing content from its library and new original productions created specifically for the micro-drama format.

Focus on Different Audience Groups

The platform is intended to reach existing Sun NXT viewers while also attracting younger digital audiences, including Gen Z viewers. The company said the short-form format is aimed at viewers who prefer consuming narrative content in shorter intervals across multiple devices.

Kaviya Maran, Executive Director, Sun TV Network, said the launch is based on changes in how audiences consume content across screens and shorter viewing sessions. She said the company’s existing content library and regional storytelling experience would be used to adapt content for newer consumption formats.

Rakesh CK, Head, Sun NXT, said the platform combines reworked content from the existing library with original stories created for the short-form format. He also highlighted the difference in viewing experiences between mobile and television screens.

Sun TV Network said its existing library comprises 65,000 hours of content, which provides the foundation for the platform’s short-form content strategy.

Sun NXT Shorts is available through the Sun NXT app, with content offered across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
